Geosynthetics in Railway Infrastructure

Geosynthetics play a critical role in modern railway engineering, providing versatile and cost‑effective solutions that enhance the long‑term performance and resilience of track infrastructure. Their use supports more reliable construction and maintenance practices by improving ground stability, managing water and soil behavior, and protecting rail corridors from environmental and operational stresses. When incorporated into railway designs, geosynthetics help create more durable track structures, extend service life, and contribute to safer, more efficient rail operations overall.

Ballast and sub-ballast reinforcement

Ballast fouling, or contamination, is a major contributor to railway track deterioration. It occurs when heavy track loads exceed the strength of the underlying subgrade, causing particles to migrate upward into the ballast. Incorporating a geotextile like MIRAFI® H2Ri or MIRAFI RSi, provides a long-term separation between the subgrade and the sub‑ballast, reinforces and stabilizes the track over weaker sections, and improves drainage. Both of these high-performance technologies exceed AREMA section 10.1.2 Enhanced Woven Geotextile guidelines.

Slope protection and reinforcement

Subsurface drainage & hard armoring

Poor drainage in railway beds is a leading cause of track failure. Geosynthetics protect buried drainage systems from fines infiltration and reduce maintain costs in perimeter drainage systems as well as hard armoring systems. MIRAFI offers both woven and nonwoven geotextiles for railway drainage applications that exceed AREMA sections 10.2 (subsurface drainage) and 10.3.1 (permanent erosion control) requirements.
